What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy was created by a German doctor called Samuel Hahnemann. The homeopathic treatment modality differs a lot from modern western medicine. In homeopathy the patient is treated individually and holistically and the homeopath takes into consideration also modalities that make the patient feel worse or better.

When visiting a homeopathic practitioner, a comprehensive anamnesis is taken. The homeopath might ask you things that seem odd, but everything is important as a whole. After the anamnesis the homeopath chooses a single remedy or sometimes a couple of remedies for you and the right potency and frequency of use. The patient buys the remedies herself. Homeopathic remedies are sold in some health stores and pharmacies. They are very cheap and last a long time.

Homeopathic remedies are made from plants, animal products or minerals. They are diluted and potencised so much that there are no chemical molecules left in the end remedy. The remedy contains the energy or information of the original substance, which stimulates the patient's body's self healing mechanisms to heal itself. (In the same way a cut heals on its own.) Homeopathic remedies have no side-effects, but sometimes they can first cause a worsening effect. This is avoided by proper dosaging.

In acute cases homeopathy gives fast results. In chronic cases you might need to see the homeopath for a longer period of time, for instance once a month. During the meetings the homeopath finds out if the remedy needs to be continued or changed.

During pregnancy and birth many ailments can be alleviated by homeopathy. During birth homeopathy is one of the non-medical pain relief methods. Homeopathy is very well suited for pregnant mothers, because homeopathy does not work in a chemical way and does not have any side effects. Homeopathy can be used side by side with conventional medicines, because it does not diminish their effectiveness or cause problems with them.
